What is it?
The Equality Act 2010 aims to ensure that UK society is fair and that every person has equal life chances. It protects individuals, particularly those who are at risk of harassment and discrimination.
The Equality Act 2010 replaces the 116 pieces of discrimination law and 13 Codes of Practice previously in force. It aims to simplify and strengthen the existing law by making it consistent and easier to understand.
What does it all mean?
There are some key changes that have come into effect including new provisions, legal definitions and terms, extended protection and an extended public sector equality duty.
Previously, as a public sector body we produced action plans for how we would improve equality of opportunity for certain protected characteristics. However under The Equality Act 2010, we will produce an action plan that sets out how we will advance equality of opportunity for all protected characteristics.
